Nail Within

Nail Within
(Listenable - 2003)
Formed from the ashes of Betrayer (the band was initially named Emblaze), this is a much much more focused release, with a sound that is basically At the Gates-style death-thrash. Yishay Swearts sounds like he got vocal lessons from Tomas Lindberg (a friend), and the new energy is definitely a huge improvement over Betrayer. Featuring musicians from Salem and Azazel, this is straight-ahead death-thrash with plenty of melodic guitars and barking, furious, scratchy-harsh vocals (the latter two very derivative of At the Gates but done very well so I'm not complaining). Tracks are consistently good and maintain a similar sound and pace throughout (except for the slower 'epic' King of Obscenity), making this a solid, if somewhat limited listen. The ripping energy and musicianship are very good, and while this is not original-sounding, I thoroughly enjoy it every time I put it on.
